第二季,最後一集的感想:

I’m not the first, and definitely won’t be the last, to write about Rome, yet another brilliant series from HBO. I have loved it since its beginning and will probably continue to do so. Anyway, what can I say about this episode that hundreds of others haven’t said? Probably nothing. What I do want to say is that it had a worthy end, as did three of the characters.

Marc Antony – it’s damn difficult to do something that Shakespeare had done and yet have the scenes be just as memorable. Well, Rome writers definitely did it. My gods, Antony completely brought it on himself, yet you can’t help but feel sympathy for him, for yes, he definitely died a Roman and died well. And Vorenus, the ever dutiful soldier, holding on the sword so that Antony could commit suicide in a grotesque parody of a lovers’ embrace, then oh-so-tenderly cleaning the man up. And Antony ordering Vorenus not to kill himself. Gah, how my heart breaks for the two men.

Cleopatra – man, the cunning little trollop, yet no matter how much she faked everything, I can’t help but think that yes, she did love Antony, even if it’s just a little bit. And of course she couldn’t win a battle of wills and wits against Octavian, though I do love that scene with those two striking each other like the snakes they were (incidentally, I’m absolutely in love with Octavian; I love Max Pirkis, but Simon Woods, with his icy-blue eyes, kills me every time. You know how writer-wannabes always write about ice-cold blue eyes or steel-blue eyes? My gods, I never thought I’d actually see a pair and in such an attractive package, too. And Maecenas was right, Octavian was the scariest when he’s trying to be charming).

Vorenus – I’m in denial. As long as I didn’t see him dead, I’m pretending he’s just living happily with Pullo, raising their respective children together.

And both Atia and Octavian, although they didn't physically die, they’d suffered something quite similar, like someone said, the two corpses, side-by-side. And the thing is, there is not one person who actually cared about Octavian now. Well, one who’d do that and speak the truth to him. Livia knew him and was his equal partner in crime and sex, but she doesn't love him, as she's probably as incapable of it as he pretended he was. How else could he be the loneliest person on the show on the greatest day of his life so far?

And Atia. Oh, Atia. How well she fulfilled Servilla’s curse. "Send her bitterness and despair for all her life. Let her taste nothing but ashes and iron." It was her triumph day, too, as Octavian had become exactly as she had wanted, and yet...

I think this really attest to how brilliant the writers are, in that there are almost no one-dimensional characters. Almost all of them, even the supposed villains, you can't help but feel sympathy for, even when they brought their "punishment" onto themselves. Especially when they brought it onto themselves.

It's brilliant and amazing and grand and epic-like, without ever being a cliché. Man. *love*
